Creators are prime targets for hackers — a stolen channel with thousands of subscribers is worth money to scammers. A strong password alone is not enough: passwords leak in data breaches, get phished, and get guessed. Two-factor authentication (2FA) adds a second check that only you can pass, and it blocks most account takeovers even when the password is stolen. If you do one thing for your channel's security this week, do this.

Google / YouTube — set up 2FA step by step

  1. Go to myaccount.google.com/security and sign in.
  2. Open "2-Step Verification" and follow the setup. Google will first ask for a phone number — that is only the starting point, not the final setup.
  3. Choose Authenticator app as your second step. Install an authenticator app (Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator or Authy) and scan the QR code Google shows. The app then generates a new 6-digit code every 30 seconds.
  4. Save your backup codes: Google gives you 10 one-time backup codes. Print them or store them offline somewhere safe (not in a cloud photo or a note on your phone). Each code works once if you lose your phone.
  5. For the strongest protection, add a security key (a small USB device such as a YubiKey). A security key cannot be phished — it only works on the real Google sign-in page. Keep a second key as a spare.
  6. Consider Google's Advanced Protection Program (free): it is Google's highest account security, made for people at high risk of targeted attacks, and it requires security keys. Search "Google Advanced Protection Program" on Google's own help pages to enrol.

Instagram — set up 2FA step by step

  1. Open Instagram → Settings → Accounts Centre → Password and security → Two-factor authentication.
  2. Choose Authentication app (recommended) and follow the setup — Instagram shows a key or QR code to add to your authenticator app. SMS codes are also offered, but they are weaker (see below).
  3. Save the backup codes Instagram gives you, offline and somewhere safe.
  4. Turn on login alerts so Instagram tells you when someone signs in from a new device.

TikTok — set up 2FA step by step

  1. Open TikTok → Profile → Menu → Settings and privacy → Security → 2-step verification.
  2. Choose authenticator app if offered, or SMS / email as a second step. Add the method and confirm the code.
  3. Save any backup or recovery codes TikTok gives you, offline and somewhere safe.
  4. Check the Security page regularly for unknown devices and sign them out.

Which 2FA method is strongest?

From strongest to weakest:

  1. Security key — a physical key. Cannot be phished or SIM-swapped. Best for your Google/YouTube account.
  2. Authenticator app — codes on your phone, no network needed. Strong and free.
  3. SMS code — better than nothing, but attackers can steal your phone number (SIM swap) and receive your codes.
  4. Email code — only as strong as your email account. If your email is hacked, the code is useless.

Use a security key for Google/YouTube if you can, and an authenticator app everywhere else. SMS is a backup, not the main method.

Backup codes and recovery — do not skip this

Common mistakes creators make

Start here: protect your Google Account first (it owns your YouTube channel), then your email, then Instagram and TikTok. Ten minutes of setup today saves weeks of recovery later — read our full 2FA guide for the general principles behind every step above.
